Does Your Dog’s Flea and Tick Prevention Actually Work? A Yes-or-No Check

Blue is a big yellow Lab on three legs. He lost his front right leg after a blood infection put him on life support. We are not saying flea and tick prevention would have changed that. We are saying that after that week, we stopped being casual about the everyday stuff. Prevention in our house is routine, like dinner.
This page is not a review. We do not rate products out of five or tell you which brand “feels” best. We ask one question about whatever your dog is on right now: does it help the dog, yes or no? Then we help you not overpay for the one your vet picked.
The yes-or-no check
Run through this with your dog’s current product. If you answer “no” to any line, that is a conversation for your vet, not a reason to panic.
| Question | Yes means | No means |
|---|---|---|
| Is your dog getting every dose on time? | The product has a fair chance to work. | Gaps are the most common reason prevention “fails.” Set a phone reminder before blaming the product. |
| Is the dose matched to your dog’s current weight? | Good. Weight bands matter. | Dogs gain and lose weight. Ask your vet to confirm the band at the next visit. |
| Comb check: no live fleas or flea dirt after a month on it? | It is doing its job on fleas. | Tell your vet. The home and other pets may be the source, not the product. |
| Tick check after walks: none attached, or dead ones only? | It is doing its job on ticks. | Ask your vet whether your area’s ticks are covered by what you use. |
| No side effects you have noticed since starting? | Keep going. | Stop guessing and call the vet. Write down what you saw and when. |
Why “it stopped working” is usually something else
When owners tell us their flea treatment does not work, the story is usually one of three things. A dose was late or skipped. The dog moved up a weight band and kept getting the old box. Or the fleas are living in the carpet, the car or on another animal that is not treated. Flea eggs and larvae sit in the house for weeks, so a treated dog can keep picking up new fleas from an untreated home. Washing bedding hot, vacuuming often and treating every pet in the house closes most of those gaps.
None of that means a product is perfect. Some dogs do better on a chew, some on a topical, and some need a different active ingredient. That is exactly why the switch should go through your vet. They know your dog’s history, what is going around locally and what is safe with any other medication.
How to check your dog in two minutes
Use a fine flea comb along the back, the base of the tail and the belly. Wipe the comb on a damp white paper towel. Black specks that turn reddish-brown are flea dirt, which is digested blood. For ticks, run your fingers slowly over the head, ears, neck, armpits, between the toes and under the tail after any walk in grass or brush. Blue makes this easy because he will lie on the carpet for anyone who offers a belly rub. Most dogs warm up to it if you pair it with a treat.
If you find a tick, remove it with fine tweezers or a tick tool, grip close to the skin and pull straight out with steady pressure. Note the date. If your dog seems off in the following weeks, that date is useful for your vet.
The money part: same product, less at checkout
Here is the honest bit. Our rule is to let the vet pick the product and then not overpay for it. If your vet has your dog on Nexgard, Budget Pet Care currently has a code for 15% off it. We checked that the link below lands on their Nexgard page with the code applied as of October 13, 2026. Offer terms are set by the retailer and can change.
If your dog is on something else, like Simparica Trio, Credelio or Bravecto, Budget Pet Care’s SUMMER12 code takes 12% off flea and tick products and includes free shipping.
Prefer another pharmacy? Best Vet Care carries many of the same vet-recommended brands. Compare the price per dose, not the box price, and check whether shipping is included.
Tell us: yes or no?
We are building a simple record of what owners say actually helps their dog, and what does not. No star ratings, no paid opinions. Just: what does your dog use, and does it work for your dog, yes or no? Drop it in the comments on our Facebook page or email blue@forpetslikeblue.com. Brands should get to learn what their products do not do, too.
Every dog is welcome here. Three legs, four legs, young, old, limping or zooming. If it helps the dog, we want to know about it.
Frequently asked questions
Does flea and tick prevention stop working over time?
Usually the cause is a missed dose, a dog that moved up a weight band, or fleas living in the home or on an untreated pet. If you still see fleas or ticks after fixing those, ask your vet about other options.
Is SAVE15 a real code?
As of October 13, 2026, our Budget Pet Care link for Nexgard applies code SAVE15 for 15% off. Retailer terms can change, so check the price at checkout.
Do you test these products?
No. We do not run lab tests or write opinion reviews. We ask whether a product helps the dog, yes or no, based on what your vet and owners report, and we help you find a better price.
